Food is one of the basic needs for human to survive. The food security of any household hugely depends on the security or sustainability of livelihoods of the household. The livelihood security of the households of southwest coastal region of Bangladesh, especially the Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira District is immensely affected by various climatic conditions and disasters. The occurrence of cyclonic disaster seems to be one of the major factors that influences or affects the assets of sustainable livelihood of the households of Shyamnagar Upazila extensively. Especially, the primary economic activities like agricultural work and forest resource collection related works are vastly affected by occurrence of cyclonic disaster. The percentages of livelihood related to food production are decreasing due to cyclonic disaster induced unfvourable environment. The decreased employment opportunity reducing the income level also lowered the purchasing capacity for food and other daily basic necessities. Thus, switching the occupation or migrating to other places seems to the only option to them to survive. Such Change of occupation and land use that are related to food production would decrease the food supply of the area.
In order to maintain sustainable livelihood and food security for households of the study area the long term disaster resilient plan and policies should be taken and implemented for vulnerable coastal areas like Shyamnagar Upazila. The preparedness measures to survive against such cyclonic disasters should be proactive instead of just reactive measures
