Graduate Overview

The Department of Geography and Environment offers following graduate degrees:

  1. Master of Science (MS) in Geography and Environment – 1 year
  2. M.Phil in Geography and Environment – 2 years
  3. PhD in Geography and Environment – 3 years
  4. Professional Master of Science in Disaster Management (MSDM) – 2 years

Master of Science (MS) in Geography and Environment

The MS degree in Geography and Environment is a one-year program. This program consists of both thesis and non-thesis streams where students must choose one specialized stream (Physical Geography or Human Geography or Planning and Development)  while applying for admission.

Students belonging to the non-thesis stream form the bulk of M.S. students. For thesis, the minimum requirements of undergraduate CGPA is 3.30 (in a scale of 4.00).

Thesis students must take at least three courses from the stream and two from the other streams or optional list.  Non-thesis students must take at least four courses from the stream and two from the other streams or optional list.  One 2 credit Lab course (GELb 502) is mandatory for all students.

MPhil and PhD in Geography and Environment

The MPhil is a two-year programme of course work and research. Facilities are available in the department to pursue higher studies leading to PhD degrees. The PhD programme basically involves research work but in some cases it may require some course work as advised by the supervisor.

Professional Master of Science in Disaster Management (MSDM)

Department of Geography and Environment offers a professional masters in Disaster Management (MSDM) which is specially designed who works or want to build career in the field of disaster management. It is a two years degree programme. Only 50 seats are available in each semester (two semesters per year)
