NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT OLYMPIAD 2018


World Environment Day 2018

World Environment Day is an annual event that aims at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all the year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from every part of this globe. June 5 was the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began in 1972. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was from 5 until 16 June 1972. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.

The theme for WED 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Environment Club, Department of Geography and Environment- University of Dhaka

The Environment Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating awareness and understanding of the various environmental issues in order to promote our perspectives into the larger Boulder community. The club is founded and run by the Department of Geography And Environment of the University of Dhaka. It is a volunteer club which runs without financial support from national or foreign governments. Subscription of the members and philanthropy of individual citizens and national organizations are the main sources of its income for meeting its routine expenditure. It organizes seminars, meetings, conferences and workshops to draw attention to general and specific problems in environment and educate the public on such issues. It holds rallies and demonstrations to build up public awareness and secure wide participation of people on environmental issues. We invite any and all individuals as well as those who have an interest in this concern, to become an activist of our alliance.

Upcoming Events for Celebrating WED 2018

It is our aim to spread the spirit of environment movement among each and every one of this country. To make it doable, it is important to involve the young generation. Since last five years we have been arranging Olympiad, Presentation Competition, Photography contest and Debate contest to make the young minds conscious about their surrounding environment. This year, we have indented to introduce some more events to engage the junior grade students along with the college and university students. On the basis of present curriculum, events have categorized into several groups according to various classes. Here is an overview of the upcoming events regarding World Environment Day, 2018.

Art Competition

Children always have unique thinking on various issues. Though they do not have proper words to explain their thoughts but have special qualities to present their untold stories through pictures. That is why; to involve the students of primary education level drawing competition is going to be arranged.

Event Theme: Group A: Green World (সবুজ পৃথিবী)

Group B: Environment-friendly Lifestyle (পরিবেশবান্ধব জীবনযাপন)

Registration Fee: 100/-

Registration deadline: 7 October

Event Date: 13 October

Reporting Time: 2.00pm

Event Duration: 3.00pm to 4.30 pm

Venue: Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka

Award Ceremony: 4:30 pm 14 October, Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban,        University of Dhaka

Eligible participants: Students, currently studying in K.G to class V in both mediums are eligible to take part in this competition. They will appear in the exam in two groups.

Group A: K.G to Class II

Group B: Class III to V

Additional Instructions: The Art Paper for the competition will be provided by the organizers. Participant must bring their art materials such as board, colors etc.

Prizes:

  1. Champions and the First Runners up of both the groups will be awarded with Prestigious Crest and Certificates at our Award Ceremony Program.
  2. All the participants will receive certificate of participation on the award ceremony.

 

Essay Competition

Essay competition is an option for the students of schools and colleges to express their ideas regarding contemporary environmental issues. Based on the given theme for each group, they can elucidate their own concepts or understandings to protect the global environment through taking part in this competition.

 Topics & Eligible participants:

Group A (Class 6-8): Environment Pollution: Bangladesh Perspective (পরিবেশ দূষণঃ বাংলাদেশ প্রেক্ষাপট)

Group B (Class 9-10): Way Towards Plastic Free World and Sustainable Development (প্লাস্টিকমুক্ত পৃথিবী ও টেকসই উন্নয়ন)

Group C (Class 11-12): Marine Pollution: Extent and Consequences (সমুদ্র দূষণঃ প্রভাব ও বিস্তার)

Submission deadline: 7 October 2018

Where to submit:  Hard copies to be submitted in Room No:  Seminar Library, 1st Floor, Annex Building, Dept. of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka.

Environment Olympiad

To spark the light of knowledge on environmental issues among our enthusiastic young generation through various contests, we have inaugurated the “National Environment Olympiad, 2018” this year. The vibrant participation of the students of various Institutions across the country made that event a grand success.

The theme of this Olympiad is ‘Pollution and Environment’ which is aligned with this year’s Environment day theme.

About the Olympiad Competition

Event Date: 14 October, 2018

Registration Fee: 300/-

Registration deadline: Online registration: 1 October,

Payment registration: 7 October

Exam time: 3:00 PM

Exam Duration: 40 Minutes

Venue: Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka

Eligible Participants: Students, currently studying in 9-12, in any Institution within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area are eligible to participate in this Olympiad. Besides, Students who have completed their HSC/A-Level but have not yet enrolled in any university can also participate.

Why to participate in the event?

  1. The event will be conducted by internationally recognized faculties from the most reputed universities of Bangladesh, who have not only excelled in their respective fields of studies but have also been awarded for their remarkable work in ensuring a better environment for tomorrow. The Olympiad question paper therefore will bear an international standard which is bound to live up to your level of expectation.
  2. The participants will be awarded with certificate that will be an encouragement to them to participate in various competitions across national boundaries.

 

Instruction for Environment Olympiad

Olympiad Exam: The questions will be simple Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) with 4 options as answers for each question. There will be only one right answer amongst these 4 probable answers.

Issues to be covered while studying
Following topics are to be covered as part of the Preparation of Environment Olympiad,

  • World Environment Day (1972-2018), History of World Environment Movement, Rio Earth Summit
  • Pollution (air, water, soil etc.)
  • Plastic Pollution
  • National and International Environmental Organizations
  • Common Environmental laws, acts and practices in Bangladesh
  • Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development and Climate Smart City
  • Natural Disasters in Bangladesh
  • Waste management
  • Recent Environmental Threats and practices in Bangladesh
  • Green House gases, Global warming and Green House effects

However, we highly recommend you NOT to rely upon these materials only but to use them as the simplest guidelines.

Map making Competition

Map is an integral part of Geography and is also an important tool of research. To visualize the environmental aspects of our country, map can be the best way. Considering this fact, this year a new competition has been added alongside the regular events that is map making competition based on the theme “Environmental problems of Bangladesh”. The participants need to submit a map (soft copy) focusing on any environmental problems along with a brief description (not more than 500 words) of the map.

Eligible Participants: This competition is only for University students. Students, who are currently studying in any University within the country can participate in this competition.

Relevant Topic: Maps can be produced on global/ regional/ national/ local perspective.

Poster Competition

Poster is one of the best ways to express any idea in an interesting way.  This year’s Poster Presentation Competition is based on the theme “Pollution and Environment”.

Eligible Participants: This competition is only for University students. Students, who are currently enrolled in any University within the country, can participate in this competition.

Phase 1: Online registration and Abstract
First, participants have to submit an abstract on the given theme or any sub-section of it through email to: envclubgeodu@gmail.com. We will conduct primary selection of top 20 participants and send confirmation.

Phase 2: Payment registration

After primary selection, participants have to complete the payment registration and thus one can enter the first round of competition.
