This past May on Monday the 8th, as part of the Course No. GELb-312: Map Reading and Interpretation, the students of the 3rd Year BS [(Hons.); Session: 2016-2017] went to a day-long study trip to the Digital Mapping Centre of the Survey of Bangladesh, situated in the Damalkot Area, Mirpur, Dhaka. This trip was under the joint auspices of the Digital Mapping Centre of the Survey of Bangladesh and Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka. The study trip was coordinated by the Course Teacher, Farzana Ahmed Mohuya, Assistant Professor of the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka. Intrigued by Theoretical and Practical aspects of Map Reading and Interpretation techniques, the students of 3rd Year (Session: 2016-2017) wanted to observe the first-hand procedure of different types of map making and interpretation techniques at a reputed National Organization like Survey of Bangladesh. Most of the students of 3rd Year (Session: 2016-2017) attended in the study trip. There were 94 students.
It was a bright sunny day of summer. However, the trip was started at around 8.30 am from the Kazi Motaher Hossain Bhaban Campus area of the University and the programme started around 10.00 am and finished by 2.30 pm. In the Digital Mapping Centre, Major Suja Uddin Pathan, PSC (Deputy-Director, Survey; In-charge of the Digital Cartographic Unit) warmly welcomed the University team with other personnel of the Centre. The team feels honored and really enjoyed all the lectures/presentations given by Major Suja Uddin Pathan, (Deputy-Director, Survey), Mr. Ganesh Chandra Roy (Assistant Director, Survey), Mr. Md. Masudur Rahman (Deputy-Director, Survey), and Mr. Syed Md. Masum (Assistant Director, Survey). All the presentations were really nice, informative and helpful with aspects of Cartography, Photogrammetry, GIS and Geodesy. After a warm tea-break, all the students and their course teacher visited the three Lab Units- Cartography, Photogrammetry and GIS to explore the map making works in action. At the end of the programme students roaming around the beautiful premises of the Digital Mapping Centre of the Survey of Bangladesh.
The team came back to the campus of Dhaka University by 4.00 pm. It was really a memorable event for the team. The transportation for this trip was provided by the Transport Office of Dhaka University. Maksudur Rahman (Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka), Mr. Md. Azizul Haque, (Senior Transport Manager, DU) and finally all the students of the 3rd Year (Session: 2016-2017) particularly- Akib Raihan, Robiul Awal, Marjia Akter Apu, Monojit Saha, Nazrul Islam and Jesmin Akhter Rahi for extending their hands for the successful completion of this day-long study trip.
